What is the International Day of Yoga?
The United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga on December 11, 2014, through resolution 69/131 — proposed by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and backed by 175 member states. Since 2015, IDY has grown from a national initiative into one of the world’s largest synchronised wellness movements.
In 2025, IDY hit a historic milestone: over 3.02 lakh participants joined the main event in Visakhapatnam, setting two Guinness World Records — including the largest yoga gathering at a single venue.
IDY 2026 builds on that momentum.
IDY 2026: Key Dates & Countdown Events
The Ministry of Ayush has structured the run-up to June 21 around four major countdown events:
- 100-Day Countdown — Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi (March 13, 2026)
- 75-Day Countdown — Lonar, Maharashtra (April 7, 2026) — entered the Asia Book of Records for the largest Trikonasana gathering
- 50-Day Countdown — Kanha Shanti Vanam, Hyderabad (May 2, 2026) — set a new record for the largest Bhujangasana gathering
- 25-Day Countdown — Khajuraho, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Madhya Pradesh
- Main Event — June 21, 2026
If you’re planning a campaign, content calendar, or community event, these countdown dates are great hooks for outreach.
The Common Yoga Protocol (CYP): The Heart of IDY
The Common Yoga Protocol is a structured 45-minute yoga sequence designed in 2015 by India’s leading yoga gurus. It’s the same routine practised simultaneously across the world on June 21 — from 7:00 AM to 7:45 AM — followed by a 15-minute customised segment.
The CYP includes:
- Prayer (1 minute)
- Loosening practices (6 minutes)
- Yogasanas — Tadasana, Trikonasana, Bhadrasana, Vajrasana, Bhujangasana, Shavasana and more (25 minutes)
- Kriya, Pranayama, Dhyana, Sankalpa (12 minutes)
- Shanti Mantra (1 minute)
The handbook recommends a 15-hour preparation (one hour a day) — though even a 5-hour introduction is enough to participate confidently.
CYP videos are available in Hindi, English, and 21 regional languages (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Assamese, Punjabi, Manipuri, Konkani, Bodo, Maithili, and more) via the Ministry of Ayush YouTube channel.
Yoga 365: From Symbolic Day to Daily Discipline
A major shift this year is Yoga 365 — an initiative to transform yoga from an annual celebration into a year-round practice. In partnership with Habuild, the Ministry is offering a 100-day free online yoga programme with daily guided sessions designed for beginners.
You can join by giving a missed call to the toll-free number 1800-315-7008.
What’s New for IDY 2026
Three new launches stand out:
- 10 Yoga Protocols for NCDs and Target Groups — specialised routines for diabetes, hypertension, asthma, mental health, pregnant women, senior citizens, adolescents, children (3–6 years), and more.
- Yoga for Air Travel — a 5-minute in-flight protocol developed by MDNIY for frequent flyers.
- MyGov Citizen Engagement — photography contests, IDY quiz, e-poster competition, jingle contest, and reel contest on the MyGov platform.
How You Can Participate in IDY 2026
The handbook outlines pathways for every group:
- Citizens: Join the 7 AM CYP session live, locally, or via national broadcast
- Yoga professionals: Lead 15-day CYP training programs (in-person or online)
- Companies & PSUs: Adopt the Y-Break workplace protocol and run staff training
- Schools & colleges: Host workshops, essay contests, and Y-themed campaigns
- Housing societies & Panchayats: Organise community CYP sessions
Every stakeholder is encouraged to start at least three weeks before June 21.
